Kyoto Gion - An Enchanting District Full of Traditional Japanese Culture

Easily one of the most famous districts in Kyoto, Gion stretches from the Kamo-gawa River west to the Yasaka-jinja Shrine. Its entertainment and geisha district arose as a result of the nearby shrines and temples, with ochaya (teahouses) opening to serve visitors in need of food and lodging. As a result, geiko (women highly trained in art and music) began to populate Gion and entertain patrons at the ochaya.

Today, it’s possible to walk around Gion and be immersed in the enchanting world of traditional Japanese culture. You can stroll the streets lined with 17th-century machiya (traditional wooden houses) and dine at restaurants that look like they could have served the Emperor of Japan himself. You can even become a maiko for a day with a once-in-a-lifetime experience in a serene Japanese garden!

If you’re visiting during the Gion Matsuri festival in July, you can watch a procession of floats as they roll down Hanami-koji street. Unlike most festivals in Japan, this one lasts an entire month and features different events at different times. The climax is the final parade of 66 hoko (poles) that represent the provinces of Japan.

You can also enjoy traditional Japanese theater and dance, as well as a tea ceremony at a classic ryokan in Gion. The ryokans range from luxury to mid-range, but all offer traditional Japanese cuisine and 京都 祇園 comfortable rooms. The Kyoto City Guide has a list of the best ones in town.

The most iconic site in Gion is the Kiyomizudera Temple, a UNESCO World Heritage Site that’s dedicated to a goddess of mercy and compassion. It’s known for its beautiful moss-covered grounds, stunning temple buildings, and a sweeping view of the city from its hilltop location.

Another must-visit in Gion is Heian Jingu Shrine, a grand memorial of the former emperors that’s modeled after the imperial palace. Located in the center of Kyoto’s historical district, Heian Jingu is a popular spot to visit for both locals and tourists alike.

For a more intimate and cultural experience, we recommend booking a Maiko Experience in the heart of Kyoto’s Gion district. This unique activity gives you the chance to transform into a graceful maiko for a day, donning elegant traditional attire and striking
